The Walkerton Public School has been sold.
Walkertons Public School is going to be the site of a condo development project.
A group of six local investors have purchased the four acre property and applied for a demolition permit
Spokesperson Mike McIntee says while they havent had their engineer go through the building yet, but they fully anticipate it will have to come down due to the age and condition of the school as well as the asbestos that is in it.
One of the first orders of business was removing the school from the Heritage Building Register List, which Brockton Council did on Monday May 13th.
McIntee says Brocktons Heritage Committee is behind the project, saying it was their recommendation that the school be removed from the Heritage Building Register List.
McIntee adds the group of local investors will be working with the Heritage Committee and has agreed to provide them with photos and artifacts from the school that they may want to preserve.
McIntee also vows the condo development project will tie in nicely with the neighbourhood.
He says they plan to construct low rise, single story properties on the lush four acres of school land.
McIntee adds the group of local investors also plan to hire local contractors for the work.
The investors plan to hold a public meeting in the near future with neighboring residents to explain their development plans and field any questions, concerns and recommendations.
McIntee says doesnt expect the shovel to hit the ground for at least a year, saying there is still a lot of red tape and preparation work to do.
