Conservative MP Larry Miller wants the Federal and Provincial Heritage ministers to designate a shipwreck site near Wiarton as a Heritage site.
The member Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, says the recently discovered site of the wreck of The Jane Miller in Colpoy’s Bay should be designated as a restricted/grave archeological site to protect it from tourists and diving activity.
He has written letters to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, as well as the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport for the Government of Ontario, to express his concerns.
The Jane Miller is a freight and passenger vessel that was built in 1879 and operated between Owen Sound and Manitoulin Island.
While carrying 28 passengers, on November 26th, 1881, the ship sank.
There were no survivors and no bodies were ever recovered.
As you heard on Bayshore Broadcasting news earlier this month, three ship wreck hunters were granted permission this past year to search for the vessel and were successful in locating the wreck.
