Runners across Grey Bruce took part in the annual Terry Fox Run over the weekend.
Runs were held in several communities including Walkerton, Hanover, Saugeen Shores, Meaford, and Owen Sound on Sunday, culminating in several thousands of dollars raised to support cancer research.
One of the Organizers for the run in Owen Sound Kathy Beattie says there was a large turnout for the annual event at Harrison Park.
“We were fortunate enough to have 185 participants join the run this year, which is up considerably from last year. We also doubled the number of teams that came out yesterday, so that was fantastic to see a lot of young people,” says Beattie.
She adds they were also able to surpass their fundraising goal of $19,200, raising over $19,500.
Over $15,000 was raised online, but Beattie says they had a lot of people show up the day of. The Knights of Columbus were also on hand collecting donations with a barbecue.
“We were really excited to see everybody out, lots of cancer survivors as well speaking at our opening ceremonies, along with Deputy Mayor Scott Greig and the Assistant Coach for the Owen Sound Attack Reagan O’Grady was out as well,” says Beattie. “We always have great participants, it’s an emotional day, lots of tears just hearing the stories of the survivors and people that are running for family and friends.”
The Terry Fox Run website says the events in Walkerton raised over $6,700, while nearly $2,000 was raised for the run in Hanover. Over $26,000 was raised in Saugeen Shores, and over $18,000 was collected in Meaford.
