The United Way of Bruce Grey is bringing back its backpack program after seeing rising demand last year.
The program provides new backpacks and school supplies to students in Grey Bruce ranging from junior kindergarten to high school.
The largest demand for the program was from high school students.
Last year, the program provided backpacks to over 2,600 students in the region, a 975 per cent increase since the program began in 2005.
The United Way aims to raise $80,000 for this year to meet the growing demand.
Fundraising Champion Kristy Andre says the growth in the program reflects the rising financial pressures families are facing.
“Education is a right, not a privilege – and that includes having the basic tools needed to participate fully in school. The Backpack Program is our community’s way of making sure no student is left behind. We are incredibly grateful to those who continue to support it year after year,” says Andre.
Additionally, the organization is bringing on Lauryn Rettinger as a new coordinator for the program.
“Everyone deserves to feel confident and prepared for school – and that starts with the right supplies,” says Rettinger.
Donations to the program can be made online at Backpacks4Kids, in person at the United Way’s Office in Owen Sound, by calling 519-376-1560, or by mail to the United Way of Bruce Grey.
