A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Hanover.
Hanover police and firefighters, and Grey County paramedics responded to the incident on 7th Avenue — near the entrance to Hanover Park — around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday evening.
Police say a 66-year-old woman was hit as she crossed the road, and then the vehicle allegedly sped away northbound from the scene.
The victim was taken to hospital, but later died from her injuries. Police identified her as Sheila Lamont of Hanover.
Hanover Police say the suspect vehicle is a red, 2007 Chrysler-PT Cruiser convertible. It had Ontario licence plates displayed of CKPR 013 at the time of the collision.
“Shortly before the collision, it was determined the suspect vehicle had travelled on Concession 2 SDR in the former Brant township, also known as the Southline,” Hanover Police say in a release. “The vehicle went northbound past the Hanover and District Hospital onto 7th Avenue driving in an erratic manner before striking the pedestrian at the Hanover Park. After the collision, the suspect vehicle continued northbound on Bruce County Road 10, turning westbound on Concession 4 in the former Brant Township.”
OPP traffic collision specialists and forensic services are assisting Hanover Police with the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with access to surveillance video who lives in the area of Concession 2 SDR (Southline) through Hanover on 7th Avenue, and along Concession 4 in former Brant Township is being urged to check for footage containing the suspect vehicle.
“Anyone with information on the driver, or the PT Cruiser is asked to contact the police immediately by calling 911. Police investigators are encouraging the driver to surrender to the Hanover Police Service and remind everyone that aiding this driver in anyway will result in a criminal prosecution,” Hanover Police say.
