Saugeen Shores’ landfill has about five to seven years of life left.
That’s according to the latest annual report from Town staff.
The Town is looking at optimizing and expanding the landfill on its existing lands, adding about 725,000 cubic metres of new space. Draft terms of reference (scope and purpose of the project) was approved by Council in March. It’s currently before the provincial government for review.
The annual report to council notes leaf and yard waste diversion is a large part of the total diversion from the landfill. Staff say recycling and sorting programs divert over 40 per cent of what gets disposed of from the landfill.
The report says 7,579 tonnes of waste was managed by the Town in 2024, adding, “The net residual waste after subtracting recyclables, metals, clean fill, electronic waste, and other divertible materials was 4,886 tonnes.”
Meanwhile the report says the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling Association (BASWRA) which picks up recycling in town says 912 tonnes of cans, plastic, glass, cardboard and paper was diverted from landfill in 2024. That includes curbside and drop off recycling.
