A fundraising concert this weekend could help put the Bruce Peninsula Community food bank in a strong position to help the community.
A few weeks ago, the food bank put out an appeal to the community for food and supplies as its shelves had become nearly bare.
Wiarton Salvation Army Community and Family Services Manager Roni Delleman says in response to that appeal, two local Salvation Army volunteers who are members of a band called the Keppel Bandits booked the new Wiarton bandshell in Bluewater Park for an August 10th concert to support the food bank.
It’s set to go Saturday, August 10th from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Delleman says, “It’s by donation and it’s a fundraiser for the Salvation Army.”
The food bank uses monetary donations to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables from a wholesaler.
Since the food bank made that appeal for support from the community, the response has been significant.
Delleman says, “It was amazing. We received a lot of community support from private individuals, from businesses ands we were overwhelmed with the amount of support we’ve received.”
Delleman says the shelves are back in good shape thanks to the food and hygiene items they’ve received, “They are very well stocked at this point and we have some surplus items as well.”
She notes, “We’re really just hoping for cash donations at this concert,” though she notes they are certainly still willing to take food donations.
Delleman adds, “We have been really overwhelmed by the support from the community and we’re very thankful for the different avenues people are pursuing to help us raise money for the food bank.”
The Bruce Peninsula Community Food Bank, which is managed by the Wiarton Salvation Army serves an average of 2,500 kg of food per month to about 250 of the most vulnerable members of the Bruce Peninsula and surrounding areas.
You can donate to the Bruce Peninsula Community food bank between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at the Salvation Army church building at 576 Edward Street in Wiarton.
