Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound Member of Parliament Alex Ruff is warning the community about a scam that claims to be associated with his office.
He says in a statement, “In recent weeks, my office has been made aware that there are unsolicited calls being made to residents of Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound trying to sell energy rebates claiming an affiliation with my office.”
Ruff adds, “To be clear, as your Member of Parliament, my office will never call you to sell you energy rebates.”
A release from Ruff’s office says, Natural Resources Canada has not approved any third parties to make unsolicited contact with homeowners to register for or participate in the Canada Greener Homes Grant.
It adds, the Government of Canada, Natural Resources Canada and its family of brands (ENERGY STAR, EnerGuide) never solicit over the telephone, or by email or go door-to-door asking to enter Canadians’ homes to inspect, sell, or rent heating and cooling products. EnerGuide home energy evaluations are performed by licensed service organizations only at the request of homeowners.
Natural Resources Canada provides the following advice on Energy Scams:
Refuse any in-home inspection from a door-to-door salesperson
Never sign anything
Do your research and double-check everything
Know your weaknesses
Avoid giving out personal information, online, over the phone or in person
Report suspected scams
Scams can be reported to your local police service and the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/report-signalez-eng.htm.
