Wiarton Willie is calling for an early spring.
The famous prognosticating groundhog did not see his shadow this morning, and relayed the news to South Bruce Peninsula Mayor Jay Kirkland who shared Willie’s prediction at exactly 8:07 a.m. on stage outside the Wiarton arena.
The early spring forecast was met with loud applause by those on hand for prediction morning.
According to folklore, if a groundhog emerges from his burrow and sees its shadow on groundhog day, it will retreat and winter will continue for six more weeks. If it does not see its shadow, then spring will arrive early.
Wiarton Willie had the same experience as some of the other well-known — but certainly less reliable — groundhogs this morning. Shubenacadie Sam, Punxsutawney Phil and Fred la Marmotte all called for an early spring as well.
Now that Willie has made his call, there are several events planned in Wiarton. There’s free public skating from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. today.
Saturday, the Wiarton Willie Festival is set to be held at Bluewater Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be gaming trailers, a trackless train, human foosball, and other activities.
