Owen Sound could be getting a new indoor rock climbing gym.
Council received a report during its meeting Monday about a proposal for a 6,100-square foot rock climbing facility in the industrial mall at 1580 20th Street East. It’s near the intersection with 16th Avenue East, north of Heritage Place.
City councillors directed staff to continuing processing the zoning by-law amendment application.
It would be Owen Sound’s first and only indoor rock climbing facility. Several people spoke in support of the proposal at a public meeting held Monday evening at city hall.
“These indoor centres that allow this type of adventure therapy really bring a sense of personal empowerent,” Owen Sound resident Kat Scott told councillors.
Carlin Vall says he is behind the push to start the business and plans to call it The Climbers Crush.
“We really believe that a climbing gym can do great things for our community and give options to recreational activities during the winter months, when things start to slow down and we can’t really use the outdoors,” Vall explains.
City staff are expecting to have a recommendation report for council at its Sept. 11 meeting.
