Some possible online Google Maps tampering received a bit of local social media attention this past week.
It appears the description of Saugeen District Senior School at 780 Gustavus Street in Port Elgin was changed to ‘Saugeen Federal Prison’ at 780 Gustavus Street on Google Maps.
There is no prison in Port Elgin.
Someone noticed the change and shared a screenshot of it on a community social media page. Of the hundreds of reactions to that post, most were laughing face emojis.
Bayshore News reached out the Bluewater District School Board about the change. A board spokesperson said they had been made aware of the incorrect information and that staff were working with Google to correct the error.
The school’s principal also sent a letter to parents notifying them of the incorrect information on the school’s Google profile.
By 6 p.m. Friday it had been corrected on the map to Saugeen District Senior School, and changed, though still incorrectly, in its Google description to Saugeen District ‘Secondary’ School.
