Bruce Power is waiving farewell to a busy 2022 as they plan to continue their major component replacement (MCR) work in the new year.
Bruce Power says it has marked another successful year by delivering on its mission of providing clean and reliable power for Ontarians, while also stabilizing the supply of cancer-fighting medical isotopes.
Director of Community and Media Relations and Economic Development John Peevers says one of the most significant accomplishments of the year was when they became the first to make lutetium-177 in a commercial reactor.
“This is an isotope that can be used to fight prostate cancer and I think having this new isotope production system will allow us to explore more new medical isotopes that can help fight different kinds of cancer, so I think a real game changer for us,” says Peevers.
Bruce Power also recently completed the bulk of the construction phase of the unit six MCR outage and will return to service in 2023.
Peevers adds the company made numerous donations throughout the year, including a $2 million pledge to the Kincardine Hospital and a $250,000 donation to the Saugeen Shores Lamont Sports Park. Bruce Power and it supplier partners also donated $185,000 to local organizations, Indigenous communities, schools, and women’s shelters as part of its holiday outreach efforts.
“These kind of things are really important for us to take a leadership role and help out in the community. It has been a busy year and one, looking back, we are very proud of,” says Peevers.
Peevers says while decreasing, they faced the challenges of Covid this year.
“We have been really fortunate to limit the number of cases we had on site, it never caused significant impact to our business, it never caused us to slow down or impact our ability to power Ontario,” says Peevers.
Looking ahead to 2023, Peevers says they have planned maintenance for one of their units as the MCR continues to be a focus.
“We have a lot to be proud of, and it’s our people and our partners who are powering us forward as a leader in clean energy and in the global fight against cancer. Together, we’re working toward a bright future and I’m excited for 2023 and beyond as we continue to focus on improving our performance, completing our life-extension activities, and doing our part to make our communities a better place to live,” says President and CEO Mike Rencheck.
