A major winter storm is about to arrive in Ontario, Environment Canada has issued a blizzard warning — a flash freeze, plenty of snow, strong winds and whiteout conditions are all expected to start this morning
Environment Canada says travel will become dangerous and is not advised.
A flash freeze this morning is expected to affect regions that had rain. Road conditions are posted by plow operators and can be found HERE
Environment Canada has described it as a “Crippling blizzard Friday and Saturday.” We could see up to 25 cms snow by Saturday morning.
There are numerous cancellations and closures including all Bluewater schools and Bruce Grey Catholic District schools are closed to students and staff.
Grey and Bruce Counties have declared a ‘significant weather event,’ meaning once the weather hits, it may take longer to bring roads back into driveable condition.
Hydro One says its crews are gearing up for the weather and are urging customers to prepare for an extended power outage by ensuring their emergency kits are stocked. That includes flashlights and 2 litres of water per person per day, first aid kit and medical items.
They say, be sure to stay clear of any fallen power lines. If you spot a fallen line, keep at least 10 metres back, even if it does not appear to be live. Report it to 911 and call Hydro One.
Environment Canada says temperatures are expected to plummet on Friday morning leading to a potential flash freeze for locations that receive rainfall. Rapidly falling temperatures will be accompanied by blizzard conditions and damaging winds. Lake effect snow will result in variability of snowfall amounts through the weekend.
Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle. Anyone who is not dressed warmly is at risk of frostbite and hypothermia in cold weather. Ensure that shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
