A $1 million Carbon Offset Accelerator Fund is being launched by Bruce Power to support projects in the region and province.
The money will be given out at the end of March to projects that focus on mitigating climate change, protecting the watershed, biodiversity and wildlife habitat, and maintaining wildlife corridors.
This follows the net zero goal announcement earlier this year by Bruce Power to be a non-emitting company by 2027, by engaging in energy and emission-reduction projects in its operations, finding other ways to reach high-emission energy sources, and if some aspects are not able to be reduced, go after emission offsets.
Bruce Power Chief Development Officer and Executive Vice-President of Operational Services James Scongack says, the company is committed to building on its role as a clean energy generator that led the phase-out of coal-fired electricity in Ontario.
“That’s why we will be the first nuclear operator in North America to be net zero by 2027 and to enable both 2030 and 2050 climate goals for Ontario and Canada,” says Scongack.
The fund will narrow in on providing monetary assistance to projects identified in the Carbon Offset Coalition, along with its partnership with Bluesource, a North American offset developer, and other alliances with a variety of organizations.
