The Grey Bruce Health Unit says it’s in the process of setting up third dose of vaccinations for certain immunocompromised patients and those in high-risk congregate settings.
In a release, Public Health says it’s working with partners to bring the vaccine to those in long-term care and retirement homes, as well as transplant recipients, patients with hematological cancers and recipients of an anti-CD20 agent.
The health unit says there is evidence supporting an increased risk of contracting Covid for people in congregate settings such as long-term care or retirement homes, and a third dose will help boost immune response.
Doses will be offered to these individuals within the home and can be administered at a minimum of five months after their second shot.
Public Health says immunocompromised patients may have a decreased immune response to COVID-19 vaccines compared to the general population, and third dose is based on a recommendation by the Chief Medical Officer of Health as well as health experts.
Third shots are available to immunocompromised patients a minimum eight weeks after a second shot. It can be obtained through contacting their health care provider or by visiting one of the vaccine clinics set up by the Grey Bruce Health Unit.
