A 26-page back-to-school guide has been released by the Province.
All students will be allowed to return to the classroom under the plan this September while remote learning will remain an option.
Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore doesn’t anticipate needing to close any schools this fall and says the Province has to normalize COVID-19 in schools, as influenza has been.
“I think we have to normalize COVID-19 for schools and have an approach that’s prudent, that’s cautious, but that realizes ‘yep we’re going to have a rise in cases, but – we’re going to adhere to the best practices to minimize the spread and to keep our communities safe,” he said.
Masks will remain mandatory for students between Grades 1 and 12 but will remain optional but recommended for children in kindergarten.
Schools are safest where high rates of community immunity are maintained, said Moore, high testing, good case and contact management, and high immunization rates.
