Kincardine is going after another Blue Flag designation for Station Beach.
However, to meet the requirements, some changes need to be made this year.
Director of Parks and Recreation Karen Kieffer says Station Beach has been a Blue Flag facility since 2006.
This year, in addition to all the usual requirements, signage must be added that creates a “No Watercraft Zone” and a “No Wake Zone.”
Kieffer says the no watercraft zone, which would be for the safety of swimmers, would not allow watercraft of any kind in the area some 400-metres south of the south pier and 100-metres west of the shore.
She says swimmers can swim wherever they want but this specific area would be a swimmers-only area.
Kieffer says they also plan to put a no wake zone sign at the end of the south pier in an effort to deter boats and seadoos from coming too close to shore at a fast speed.
Cost to be a Blue Flag beach is $1,000 with the signage and buoys to cost around $3,500.
Council will consider the request on May 7th.
Blue Flags are awarded to beaches and marinas that meet strict criteria for water quality, environmental education, environmental management, and safety and services.
There are only 18 beaches in Canada that have the Blue Flag status.
