The OPP are warning about an online cottage rental scam that will leave you short of a cottage and cash.
Police say the scam involves the victim booking a cottage online and paying either the deposit or the full rental price.
Once arriving at the property, the victim will learn the cottage is either someone’s full-time home, not available for rent, or simply does not exist.
OPP say they have received a number of reports of the scam happening over the last couple of weeks, and warn it is very difficult to get your money back once you’ve paid.
The best way to go about renting a cottage is to deal with the owner directly, or with a reputable firm that specializes in cottage rentals.
